About Onyx

Founder Story, Vision & Mission

“It is better to follow the voice inside and be at war with the whole world, than to follow the ways of the world and be at war with your deepest self.“

– Michael Pastore

A supportive environment where leaders can make mistakes, learn & emerge stronger

Onyx Leadership Collective was founded from a shared understanding of the unique societal and workplace pressures that men of color face. In many environments, men of color are often valued solely for their performance, expected to excel under immense pressure while navigating the complexities of bias, isolation, and the burden of representation. This relentless focus on output often leaves little room for vulnerability, personal growth, or authenticity.

At Onyx, we aim to shift this narrative. Our collective of seasoned coaches—who have lived through these very challenges—offers a safe space where leaders can learn, grow, make mistakes, and, most importantly, express themselves authentically. We’ve all faced the pressures of conforming, battling internalized doubt, and walking the tightrope of proving ourselves while staying true to who we are. Some situations we handled well, others not so well, but through it all, we gained wisdom and empathy that now form the foundation of our coaching.

Onyx is unique in its singular focus on the challenges specific to men of color. We understand that their journey in leadership is different, shaped by systemic barriers, societal expectations, and the pressure to constantly perform at their peak. Our mission is to empower these leaders to take their lives, leadership capabilities, and careers to new heights, all while maintaining their authenticity. We help them break free from limiting beliefs and cultural pressures, allowing them to become powerful, dynamic forces for good in their businesses, homes, and communities.

Through Onyx, leaders will find a community that supports them fully—not just in their performance but in their entire being. We provide the tools and guidance to navigate leadership roles with confidence, purpose, and integrity, all in a space where they are free to be themselves. By fostering self-awareness, resilience, and emotional intelligence, we help our clients lead with authenticity and drive lasting change in the organizations and communities they serve.

Empowering leaders to live with Strength, Authenticity, and Purpose, driving workplace excellence, performance, and advancement.

Founder & CEO Marvin Chambers

Marvin Chambers, the founder and CEO of Onyx Leadership Collective, grew up in East Baltimore, a neighborhood where sports were central to life and identity. Marvin quickly became a playground legend due to his immense talent in baseball, earning respect from his peers. Yet, despite his talent, confidence didn’t always come naturally. His self-doubt would sometimes emerge during the most critical moments.

Fortunately, Marvin was blessed with two influential mentors: his father and uncle, who each took a unique approach to coaching and leadership. His father, supportive and encouraging, often taught through storytelling, while his uncle, direct and demanding, pushed Marvin to reach higher standards through practice and repetition. These men played pivotal roles in shaping the man Marvin would become, instilling the principles of strength, fortitude, accountability and growth.

The Baseball Story that Changed Everything

One particular moment during Marvin’s childhood stands out as a breakthrough experience. During a Little League playoff game, Marvin was asked to play shortstop, a position outside his comfort zone. Late in the game, with his team leading 11-8, the pressure mounted as the ball was hit to him six consecutive times—and each time, he made an error. Marvin’s confidence was shattered, and tears welled in his eyes. He wanted out.

But his uncle, firm and unyielding, shouted, “I’m not moving you; we are going to win or lose with you at shortstop.” Those words, combined with his team’s trust, forced Marvin to confront his fears head-on.

Despite the mistakes, Marvin stayed in the game, and when his opportunity came, he delivered. After catching a fly ball to end the inning and with the game tied, Marvin’s father—serving as third base coach—encouraged him to “be aggressive” and “be a hitter.” Taking his father’s advice, Marvin connected with the first pitch, eventually racing around the bases to score the game-winning run.

That defining moment taught Marvin valuable lessons that are central to the Onyx Leadership Collective philosophy, which focuses on developing resilient, accountable, and authentic leaders. The following principles, learned on the baseball field, shape the collective’s mission:

Embrace the Uncomfortable

Winners Seek Accountability

Don’t Hesitate When Opportunity Arises

Help Often Comes from Unexpected Places

Resilience through Adversity

Key Principles of the Onyx Mentor-Coach and Leadership Philosophy

At Onyx Leadership Collective, we believe that the journey to exceptional leadership begins with deep self-awareness. Our coaching philosophy centers on helping leaders gain clarity about who they are, what drives them, and how their unique identities influence their leadership style. We empower leaders to develop an authentic leadership presence rooted in their personal values and experiences, rather than conforming to external expectations.

Self-Awareness as the Foundation of Leadership

True leadership starts with understanding oneself—your strengths, values, biases, and emotional triggers. At Onyx, we guide our clients through a process of self-discovery that allows them to harness their full potential and lead with authenticity. We believe that when leaders are clear about who they are, they can make better decisions, build more meaningful relationships, and inspire others more effectively.

The Power of Emotional Intelligence

In today’s complex work environments, emotional intelligence (EQ) is critical for leading diverse teams, fostering collaboration, and navigating difficult conversations. Our coaching emphasizes the importance of developing EQ, enabling leaders to build trust, manage conflict, and create a positive work culture. Leaders who are emotionally attuned to themselves and others can cultivate an atmosphere where their teams feel safe, valued, and motivated.

Building Resilience & Overcoming Barriers

Leaders of color often face unique challenges, from unconscious bias to being held to higher standards. We help our clients develop the resilience to navigate these obstacles while maintaining their integrity and confidence. Resilience is not just about bouncing back but growing stronger from adversity. Our approach ensures that leaders not only survive these challenges but thrive in the face of them, continually growing as powerful forces for good.

Authenticity & Purpose

At Onyx, we emphasize the importance of leading from a place of authenticity. Too often, leaders feel pressured to conform to conventional leadership models, sacrificing their true selves in the process. We coach our clients to embrace their uniqueness and lead in a way that reflects their personal mission and purpose. This authenticity not only enhances leadership effectiveness but inspires others to do the same.

Safe Space for Growth & Expression

We recognize the societal pressures placed on men of color to perform, often at the cost of self-expression and vulnerability. Onyx offers a safe space where leaders can learn, grow, and make mistakes without fear of judgment. This environment fosters the confidence to take risks, develop new skills, and explore different leadership approaches. We encourage our clients to express themselves fully, knowing that their true power lies in their authenticity.

Accountability & Ongoing Development

We believe in the importance of accountability in personal and professional growth. Through our one-on-one coaching, group programs, and mastermind sessions, we provide continuous support and challenge our clients to strive for excellence. Our goal is not just short-term success but lasting leadership impact. Leaders who work with Onyx leave with a stronger sense of purpose, equipped to lead both in their organizations and in their broader communities.
